Crime is when you fake business expenses to cover up a payoff to an adult film actress who wants to cash in on your campaign for president. Corruption is when the head of the nation’s greasiest tabloid, a perpetual fount of lies and nonsense, expresses concern that your deeds are too sleazy for him. Crime is when a U.S. resident is murdered and dismembered by Saudi hit men. Corruption is when the all but acknowledged killer invests $2 billion in your talentless son-in-law’s fund, which other investors shun.
MP demands answers from police in pub fire probe
The following month, the building was gutted in a fire and the new owners demolished it against the council's instructions. In February 2024 South Staffordshire Council issued the landowner with an enforcement notice which requires them to reconstruct the building. Sophia and Charles mourn the fates of Edith and the “crooked child,” but are glad to leave Three Gables behind and begin their married lives free of scandal.
Cheers to being crooked again. English pub razed after a fire to be rebuilt as it was
Three Gables is a twisted and teetering building located in Swinly Dean, England. The overgrown cottage-style house is home to three generations of the Leonides family, including their wealthy patriarch, Aristide. An unscrupulous businessman who amassed his fortune through questionable practices, Aristide is enjoying his second marriage to Brenda, an attractive woman 50 years his junior.
Gillian Anderson
Sophia Leonides, granddaughter of the late Greek business tycoon Aristide Leonides, visits private investigator Charles Hayward. She asks Charles to investigate Aristide's death, suspecting that he has been murdered. Charles agrees reluctantly, feeling conflicted due to an earlier a love affair with Sophia in Cairo. Charles seeks the consent of Chief Inspector Taverner of Scotland Yard to look into the case. Sophia de Haviland (Leonides) comes to meet her past fling and presently private investigator Charles Hayward. They haven’t spoken much after their supposed stint in Cairo, but now, her grandfather Aristide Leonides is dead.

Review: In ‘Unsung Hero,’ a family’s musical success story comes to life via the clan itself

His domineering wife Clemency is a plant biologist with extensive knowledge of poisons. Aristide had been the bullying and manipulative patriarch of the large and idiosyncratic Leonides family who all lived together on the family estate. He had died from a heart attack after his regular insulin injection – given by his wife Brenda – had been laced with eserine from his eye drops. Brenda is Aristide's second wife, a former casino dancer and much younger than her husband. Trump has already succeeded at corrupting much of what’s corruptible.

With the fear that Lady Edith may do something to Josephine, Charles and Sophia hunt them down. However, the actual truth is discovered when Sophia begins to read the diary. In her diary, Josephine confesses to killing her grandfather out of sheer boredom. The whodunit mystery is put to rest with the revelation, but Charles and Sophia are in for another surprise. Charles asks Josephine what she knows about the murder, but Lady Edith intervenes in the conversation.
It’s utterly baffling that the film spends so much time teeing up Hayward’s backstory only to effectively render it irrelevant in the face of the central mystery (I assume this works better on the page). Contrived tensions between Hayward and Scotland Yard are similarly peppered in for little reason at all. He searches Edith's garden shed, and finds a bottle of cyanide; also Josephine's missing notebook, buried in quicklime. In the attic of Three Gables, Charles finds a stash of love letters between Brenda and Laurence, confirming their affair. They are arrested for the murder of Aristide, but while they are in custody, Josephine is nearly killed by a booby trap. Shortly afterward, another attempt is made on her life when powdered digitalin pills are mixed into a cup of hot cocoa meant for her.
Aristide steered his descendants’ lives with a heavy hand, causing them to grow unhealthily codependent. All of them stand to gain financially from his death, so each has a reason to want him dead, but it’s soon discovered that Aristide duped them all into signing a fake will. Behind their backs, he left his entire fortune to Sophia, passing on his role as head of the family to her and forcing Charles to consider his fiancĂ© as a suspect. During World War II, Sophia goes to Cairo to work in the office of Foreign Affairs. There she falls in love with Charles Hayward, a young officer in the English diplomatic service. The two get engaged but agree to put off their marriage until after the war.
Maybe someone else will take another stab at it in the near future. Towards the end of the Second World War, Charles Hayward is in Cairo and falls in love with Sophia Leonides, a smart, successful Englishwoman who works for the Foreign Office. They put off getting engaged until the end of the war when they will be reunited in England. Lady Edith de Haviland is the sister of Aristide's late first wife, fond of stalking the grounds, blasting moles in the lawn with a shotgun.
The title refers to a nursery rhyme ("There Was a Crooked Man"), a common theme of the author. Josephine hints that she has found clues, but will not disclose them. The ladder to Josephine's treehouse is sabotaged and she falls and is knocked unconcious. Suspicion switches to Sophia after another, properly signed, will is discovered, leaving the whole estate to her.
Mr Longhi spoke at the House of Commons on Wednesday to bring in a bill which would require local councils to maintain a register of heritage pubs in their areas. Located in Himley in England's Black Country, the building was originally an 18th-century millhouse before it was converted into a pub in the 1830s. In July 2023, the pub closed and was sold to a quarrying and landfill business adjacent to the pub.
